Hi, I’m Caroline, owner of Cotswold Cupcakes. I started life not really knowing where I wanted to go or what I wanted to do and built myself a career as a project manager through luck rather than choice. Since having my two beautiful children it’s as if life has changed. I know that sounds a little cheesy but my priorities are completely different now.
I didn’t spend very long on maternity leave for either child, having to go back to work to keep the money coming in. I’ve been back at work for about 18 months now and I just can’t get into it. It’s not for me anymore. The office politics, the set hours, the downright rudeness of some clients and the travelling. Being in South London when the nursery calls and says Florence needs picking up because she’s ill isn’t ideal!
During my second maternity leave I found a bit of a passion for baking and was soon making too many cakes for our small household to manage so they started getting distributed at the husbands work and so forth. It wasn’t long before I had a few people ask me for cakes – I jumped at the chance and uploaded the photos, as you do, to Facebook. I was overwhelmed with people’s compliments and so Cotswold Cupcakes was born. Luckily for me I am friends with a lovely group of people in the design and print industry and soon had a brand and website which reflected not only me but my business too. I still tweak it now and again – that’s the perfectionist in me.
The business was put on the back burner from November 2012, when I went back to work, and it’s only now, now that I work part time, that I am able to pick it up again. It’s hard work keeping on top of the house, the day job, the cake design and baking, the decorating as well as all the admin that goes with it like ensuring you’re registered, insured and have the adequate health and safety qualifications.
So that’s where we’re at now and I am super excited to let you know that I will be taking the ABC Professional Cake Decorating course come September 2014. I’ve always enjoyed learning and hope that this course will give me some really solid foundations on which to grow my own business. I’d love to hear from anyone in a similar boat – it’s great to swap experiences and learn.
